Commit To Complete

Statistics show the surest way for anyone to land a job in their chosen field is to finish college and earn a degree or certificate. And that's exactly what students at UH Maui College promised to do—they signed a mass pledge to complete their degrees and certifications before leaving community college for transfer or to enter the job market.

On Wednesday, Jan. 25, more than 150 UHMC students gathered on campus to sign the national Commit to Complete Pledge, part of a national community college movement. In April 2010, leaders of six national organizations representing 1,200 community colleges across the nation signed "The Call to Action," a pledge to increase student completion rates by 50 percent over the next decade.

The signing of the Commit to Complete pledge is evidence of the Call to Action at work, and UHMC students were glad to take part. One student remarked upon signing, "I already made this promise to myself, but it feels more real now that I signed the pledge."

It's not too late: You can still sign the pledge banner at its new home within the UHMC Student Lounge.

The coordinators of this event asked Ho‘oulu to extend a big mahalo to all of the wonderful student support groups who participated, including Career Services, Ku‘ina, The Learning Center, Pai Ka Mana, Student Life, the Counseling Department, the Financial Aid Office, "and anyone we inevitably forgot here."
